Logo making is a very important part of branding, and an attractive logo is worth a thousand clever brand names. When you make logos, always use vectors to allow different variants of your logo for brochures, cards, blog and sites.
Branding is focusing on one idea and doing it well; as you make logos you might feel the need to stuff too many ideas or use too many fonts-avoid the urge.
If you make logos with a text message, make sure that it can be read even when the logo size is small.
Branding through pictures might work, but not with logos: avoid pictures as they don't scale well and create a lot of trouble for the designers.
